Thana Lot
Ah yes, the famed temple in the ocean - Thana Lot. Unfortunately we went at the wrong time of day (as our not-so-resourceful-or-friendly-or-even-remotely-helpful driver Norman didn't want to take us many places anyway and insisted on doing it in order and as quickly as possible), so the tide was down and there was only a temple at the top of a large rock. Which was still cool and all, except that you couldn't go up and see it. And it was very overcast outside. So I stayed down at sea level with my friend Beryl and wandered in and out of the zillions of tourists and playing with the baby crabs crawling over my feet. And laughed at the fat Australian guy and his wife who were taking pictures with a massive snake (I imagine for Balinese the Aussies are the Americans of Europe... they were everywhere, mostly overweight, yapping in loud voices, putting shrimps/prawns on barbies left and right, and all wearing those damn Crocs sandals... I love Australia... I bet it would be just like going home to the US, except for the part about putting shrimps on barbies... we Americans like to put Kens on Barbies). Then I went and bought a postcard with a magnificent photo of Thana Lot with the tide up and the sun low on the horizon and imagined I had taken the photo myself.
